ah - emacs. probably a wee bit more complexity than I really need for an editor as I’m really not into extending the editor, scripting it or even into LISP. Sure, it was fun being introduced to batmail in college (an emacs-based email/newsreader) and some other mail reader I used while at TenFold. It’s amazing how keyboard bindings stick with you for life and it takes quite a bit of effort to unlearn them.
I’ve been using emacs bindings for almost 30 years now and the fact that I’m able to use them almost anywhere there is a text field in macOS or iPadOS is a godsend (and also tells me there are a lot of geeks at Apple). So the day I discovered emacs is no longer distributed with macOS, my jaw dropped - really? All these years and just like that - no more? I thought it would be easy to put emacs back but it seems like I’d have to turn to homebrew - I tried and got the windowed version by default - no thanks. There must be an easier way. There is - it’s called mg (special thanks to the StackExchange community for pointing the way!) - it’s emacs but not emacs - but in fact, for what I use emacs for (a basic editor), it’s emacs and a super lightweight emacs!
So now I’m debating whether I should train my mind to type “mg” to bring up my editor and just alias emacs to mg.
Ah - the things geeks ruminate on... 🤓
